In an ideal world, every negotiation is collaborative and both sides look to grow the pie. In the real world, that doesn’t always happen. Yes, we want you to come to the table with a collaborative mindset, but you need to be ready and able to deal with competitive situations.
Negotiation is a skill, just like public speaking, running, or chess. It’s something that takes time and effort to develop. Anyone can learn and get better, but it takes time, effort, and lots of preparation.
Forming connections is the cornerstone of any successful partnership, and it starts during the negotiation. Offer to do something small early on that will build trust. It will pay off when things get more challenging later in the negotiation.
Negotiations are hard. Don’t be afraid to try something creative and unconventional. The best negotiators are the ones who can think outside the box at the 11th hour to break an impasse and get a deal done.
An impasse in negotiations often signals that not all interests have been explored. To break it, keep communication open, offer small gestures of goodwill, and consider neutral third parties. Keeping multiple issues on the table can help avoid deadlock on a single point.
In negotiations, patience is crucial. Rushing can result in poor solutions or unnecessary concessions. Take the time to build trust, challenge deadlines, and avoid hasty agreements that weaken your position. Time may work against you, but patience is a powerful tool.

War. Global instability. Tariffs and trade barriers. Uncertain macroeconomic environment. Companies need to reimagine and optimize their supply chain to hit financial and operational goals. Effective negotiations have never been more important.
Watch out for the "surprise attack' tactic in negotiations, where a new issue is introduced unexpectedly to catch you off guard. This can harm trust and cooperation. Defend by sticking to the agenda, building trust, and preparing well. Avoid responding to surprises on the spot.
In negotiations, focus on understanding interests rather than positions. Building trust reveals deeper motivations and leads to win-win outcomes. Avoid disclosing too much too early, and use clear communication to assess alignment and alternatives without being confrontational.
Email negotiation saves time but can hurt trust and creativity. Use it for simple tasks, but build rapport and tackle complex issues face-to-face when possible.
When negotiating, knowing the relationship you want to build is essential. This long-term thinking will shape the strategy you should use while negotiating and will determine the negotiating environment.
Remember, win-win does not mean both sides win equally. It just means both sides are better off having done the deal than not.
The best negotiators are creative thinkers, coming up with novel ideas that break an impasse and address the interests of both sides. Creativity and thinking outside the box are key.
As a negotiator, you may find yourself in a country where people are customarily late for appointments. Don't get angry and never take the liberty of being late for an appointment yourself.
