Roots & Recipes: Tribal Foodways in a Changing World At the Bharat Tribes Business Conclave 2026, the session on “Roots & Recipes: Tribal Foodways in a Changing World” explored the richness and diversity of tribal culinary traditions and their relevance in a rapidly evolving global food landscape. The discussion highlighted how indigenous food systems are deeply rooted in ecological wisdom, sustainable practices, and cultural identity, while also offering immense potential for nutrition security and livelihood generation. Chaired by Mr Anant Prakash Pandey, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Tribal Affairs, and moderated by Ms Manisha Bhasin, Corporate Chef, ITC Hotels, the session brought together culinary experts and practitioners. The panel featured insights from Ms Manish Mehrotra, Nisaba Chef; Mr Ashish Bhasin, Cuisine Consultant; Mr Pramod Sinha, NE Cuisine Specialist; Ms Aparna Rajgopal, Chef & Organic Farmer Expert; Ms Tanisha Phanbuh, Practitioner of Meghalaya’s Indigenous Cuisine and Dr Chubbamenla Jamir, Director and Founder, Native Foodscape Foundation. The session underscored the importance of preserving traditional food knowledge, promoting tribal ingredients and recipes, and creating market linkages for indigenous cuisine. I had the privilege of engaging with an inspiring group of climate scientists through the My Climate Risk Interdisciplinary Learning Group under the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) on 10 Nov 2025. It was a meaningful opportunity to share my research and learning journey on a topic deeply connected to both my heart and my roots: “Listening to the Mountains: Insights from Indigenous Mountain Food Systems for a Resilient Future.” The presentation was followed by rich and insightful discussions that deepened our collective understanding.
