So Elon Musk basically wants to put AI data centers in orbit because space is the ultimate cooling system. That sounds practical, but when you hear him talk about the light of consciousness, you realize what he is actually doing. He is desperately trying to create an off-site backup for humanity. We really are living in a sci-fi novel.

Columbus-era voyages and Mars exploration rhyme: frontier narratives mobilize capital and state power, tech breakthroughs open a window, and first movers try to shape the rules and logistics. But the core difference matters: the “New World” collided with existing societies and produced brutal extraction; Mars (so far) offers no known human society to conquer and no quick trade payoff—it's closer to a long-horizon survival and governance stress test.

Meta loves talking about the metaverse, but Second Life already ran the experiment: UGC, virtual land, virtual currency, a real in-world economy. The difference is mostly this: SL tried to build a world. Meta is trying to build an entry point—then lock the freedom (and the risk) behind moderation and policy. The most immersive part might be getting lost in the Terms of Service.
