I’ve always been fat. Overweight. This guy was in charge of my entire existence for a while. He could do like 100 pull-ups with what looked like zero effort. He ran 3 miles and like 12 minutes. This guy is literally the marine of legend. While he was in charge of me, I lost around fifty pounds in three months. Roughly 3 1/2 years after I graduated Boot Camp he joined my unit as the radio chief. The thing about legendary model Marines is that they are generally insufferable to anyone E-5 and below. Something happened and I really forget what it was. He was probably just trying to assert dominance, but there was a month where he would have everybody at the comm shop at 5:30 in the morning in PT gear. Seven days a week. Most of the time all we did was leave and go back to bed if we weren’t exercising that day. He wanted the formation ready by 5:15 and everyone had to be there to be ready for formation by 5:00 and if everyone wasn’t there by 5 AM in the morning to be ready by 5:30 then we just went running like 6 miles. Chesty forbid one of the marines forgets their glow belt. IYKTYK. You used to be able to get gag greeting cards on eBay and someone would draw up a fancy greeting card with whatever you wanted to say and mail it to the person. I had a greeting card that said “you’re invited” and then on the inside it said to “go F yourself.” He didn’t like that at all. He got big mad. I don’t know if he ever found out it was me. This was 19 years ago so he might’ve gotten over it by now, but he was pretty upset at the time. He made everyone drop what they were doing to get lectured and go to Hooters to get drunk. The whole unit. This was general workplace drama in the Marines by the way.

My buddy told me that when he was in they told them to take their masks off and recite the soldiers creed as loud as they could. He just got to the word soldier before coughing his lungs out

Everyone was standing there watching this. The recruit started running to the door. One of the drill instructors, the biggest baddest black guy you’ve ever seen, built like a tank, was standing outside the door holding it shut laughing and crying at this guy. Absolutely having the time of his life. You could see him through the windows. The drill instructors kicked the mask around in the floor and then grabbed it slapped it on his face. The gas drops to the floor and over the years I imagine that floor is soaked with the stuff and now so was his mask. This was one of the most insane things I’ve ever experienced. The gas chamber is a magic place.

There was one guy. they took the mask off in a calm way. Handed it back and told him to put it back on. You’re supposed to be able to put it on by touch without looking at it, but I reckon he felt like he needed to look at it. This man threw the mask on the ground and started screaming.

Forget Plato's Cave The learned helplessness experiment bothers me more. In 1967, Martin Seligman and Steven Maier ran experiments where dogs were exposed to shocks they could not control. Nothing they did stopped what was happening. Later, the dogs were put into a situation where they actually could escape. They just had to cross a small barrier. They didn't. They had already learned that trying was pointless. The door was basically open and they still stayed there. Some pretty ugly implications for humans. Keep someone in a system long enough where working harder changes nothing. Complaining changes nothing and following the rules changes nothing. Trying again changes nothing. Eventually they might stop trying. Then one day an opportunity appears and everyone looking from the outside says, “Why don't they just do something?” They already did. A hundred times. People don't rebel when conditions get bad. Not always. People will shut down and withdraw. They distract themselves and accept shit they once would have fought against. They have learned that fighting changes nothing. Who has to convince people that the cage is good? You don't. You need to convince them the door doesn't open. Eventually you can unlock it and they will never even check.
