Movie Monday. 🎞️ Dilute Orange Vs 'REAL' Orange. 🍊 1979 Spider-Woman cartoon vs the comic it chloroformed. - 16 episodes. - One season. - Junior Spider-Man origin, - Wonder Woman spin-change, - power of the week (talk to the spiders, they eat the wall super fast 😳, never mention it again.) - Trademark grab in a leotard. 💰 The book was the opposite: Wundagore, Hydra, a macabre off-beat horror title. People flinch when she walks in. #5’s cover still says it - "to know her is to FEAR her." Yesterday’s Bronze of the Day even rhymes with the cartoon intro: woman in a web. Comic web = cage. Cartoon web = title card. The Kingpin episode is the tell. Bound, broadcast live: Jessica Drew is Spider-Woman. This is the closest the show gets to the mask-as-cage idea. Then a robot double and a wink... The Spidey meet is the other tell. In the Cartoon: a 'polite handshake.' Whereas in the long awaited Comic crossover (#20): he shrugs off her venom blast, webs her boot off, talks like the bigger spider in her book. ('Don't you know who I am?') Same name. Different genre. He didn’t need to die. He needed to be a guest, not the star of her title. 🙄 Kids wanted more (you can't fool them...) The comic ran 50 issues and too many writers before the 'weirdness' leaked out. The cartoon had already replaced her in people’s heads. "To know her is to fear her" got diluted. *(We’ll get to the Gruenwald/Nocenti issues later this month...) Toy Tuesday. Kettle’s on. ☕🍃 This week’s “modern” Jessica Drew is the 2018 Lizard-wave figure: red turtleneck jacket, black sleeves, orange belt, that yellow-orange chest diamond pretending to be a spider, removable orange glasses, bare face, long black hair. Hasbro called it modern. The brief at the time was detective-in-street-clothes, not full mask-and-webs. As plastic, it does the job. Clean face. Glasses come off. She can hang in mid-air without looking like a house brick. 😎 Iconic is a different test... Classic Jessica is the red-and-yellow suit, the 'wasp-waist' ('Arachnid') emblem, the mask you can read from across a spinner rack. Bronze Era design is silhouette first. You KNOW who it is before you read the caption. (This one needs the caption...) Glasses off: well-painted woman in a 'sports jacket.' Glasses on: still halfway to “SHIELD analyst who moonlights.” That’s the confusion. 😕 Modern often means she can pass in a crowd. Iconic means she doesn’t have to. And then they stand her next to 'rooster-hair' (and 'Red Cheese' pretender...) Carol in the star suit. Two rebrands sharing a fence. Names stayed. Symbols drifted. If the analytics skew 'Forever Young' ❤️‍🔥 - and ours do - that photo is the whole argument in one frame. 🤔 Venom blast? Mild. Not a miss as a toy. A miss as a statement of who Jessica Drew is on a shelf next to the classic suit. Last week was joints and face printing. This week is whether the costume still says the character when you squint. (Well, his ego certainly was..? 🪽) He webs a boot. He talks like the bigger spider in someone else’s book. She has never heard his name. Gruenwald’s last issue as writer. In 2021 Sariah Wilson asked Daisy Ridley if she had heard the Spider-Woman rumours. She had not. Once it was explained: “OMG, I would love to play Spider-Woman.
