I nearly walked past Farleigh Hungerford Castle’s best surprise I’d come to Farleigh Hungerford Castle in Somerset expecting the ruined gatehouse and moat, but stepping into the little chapel changed the whole visit. Above the stonework, a faded heraldic painting still clings to the wall, with strange beasts and birds surrounding the shield. After all that heavy defensive stone outside, this fragile patch of colour made the castle suddenly feel inhabited rather than simply ruined.

Hastings Castle’s £6.95 Ticket Left Me Wondering Where the Castle Was I just paid £6.95 to enter Hastings Castle in East Sussex, only to find a small ruin, an empty dungeon and a view partly dominated by a car park. The Victorian cliff railway up was genuinely the highlight, which says rather a lot when the castle was supposed to be the destination. I left feeling thoroughly short-changed.

Dundonald Castle made history work for a three-year-old I’ve just taken a three-year-old around Dundonald Castle in South Ayrshire, where the medieval tower house built for Robert II could easily have been far beyond his attention span. Instead, our guide pitched the history perfectly for us, and the place was buzzing with a Viking, birds of prey, talks and crafts. Seeing a small child actually absorbed by a 650-year-old castle was the real triumph. A genuinely lovely family visit.

We paid £31.50 for Tutbury Castle and left within 30 minutes I just took my family to Tutbury Castle in Staffordshire for its Steampunk event, paying £15 per adult, £1 for our two-year-old and another £1.50 to park in a field. We expected a proper afternoon out, but after the ruins, a cash-only tearoom and beer tent, we had exhausted what there was to do in barely half an hour. Beautiful history deserves a visit that feels worth staying for, and this simply didn’t for us.

I took the smaller doorway and found the castle’s unfinished heart I’ve just wandered through Kirby Muxloe Castle in Leicestershire, and the little brick doorway into the west tower stopped me more than the moat did. I stepped through and followed the tight spiral staircase upwards, with those worn red-brick steps curling around beneath me. The strange part is knowing this tower was the only one fully completed in an ambitious fortified home that was never finished. Standing inside it made the whole place feel less like a ruin and more like a grand plan interrupted halfway through.

I came for Goodrich Castle’s views and stopped underground instead I’ve just been wandering through Goodrich Castle in Herefordshire, near Ross-on-Wye, and the part that stayed with me wasn’t the view from the towers. I stepped down beneath the old keep and found this small stone dungeon, then lingered over the cramped arches and bare walls. Above ground the castle feels enormous, but down here it suddenly became human-sized, and I found myself thinking about what confinement inside such a place actually meant. That quiet little room changed the whole visit for me.

Craigievar Castle made a five-year-old part of the tour At Craigievar Castle in Aberdeenshire, near Aberdeen, our guide turned the 17th-century tower-house tour into something my daughter could actually join in with. She made my five-year-old her little helper, and suddenly those old rooms and steep spiral stairs felt alive rather than untouchable. We finished with drinks and crisps outside, staring back at that extraordinary pink tower. I’d happily take her again.

Peveril Castle Made the Peak District Feel Like a Kingdom I just climbed to Peveril Castle above Castleton, Derbyshire, where this Norman fortress once controlled the Hope Valley. The steep path makes you earn it, but standing inside the ruined keep and looking back across the route from Mam Tor suddenly explains why this hill mattered. The staff encouraged questions too, which made the stones feel far more alive than simply reading boards. A small ruin, but a glorious place to linger — warmly recommended.

One Tiny Window Changed My 144-Step Castle Climb At Rochester Castle in Kent, I started up its 144-step spiral staircase for the high view, but a tiny square window stopped me halfway. Light caught the rough curve of the wall and the uneven treads. Suddenly, this huge Norman keep felt measured in footsteps, not height. I stood there imagining the ordinary journeys its rooms once demanded—food carried up, weary legs coming down. The rooftop view was grand, but that cramped bend stayed with me. It made the ruin feel lived in.

One Doorway Made Belsay Castle Feel Like Home At Belsay Castle in Northumberland, I stopped at a plain doorway in the stripped manor rooms and finally understood how this fortress became a family home. A few steps led beneath a pointed arch, then my eye travelled through another opening. Behind these rooms stood the fortified medieval tower; later generations added more comfortable living space as the border became safer. I had been hurrying towards the rooftop view. Turning back for those quiet doorways made the castle feel less like a monument and more like a house repeatedly adapted around the people inside.

Turning Back Made Wiltshire’s Old Wardour Castle Feel Inhabited At Old Wardour Castle near Tisbury, Wiltshire, I climbed the steps towards the great hall, then turned back into the little courtyard. That pause changed everything. The grand classical doorway, high windows and stone alcoves belong to a home designed to impress, not simply a fortress. I could suddenly picture meals being carried upstairs while servants crossed the rooms below (far more interesting than another battlement). From the centre, the six-sided castle felt surprisingly intimate. It was ruined, but no longer empty.

Warwick Castle’s Pop Stage Drowned Out Its History I just took the children to Merlin-run Warwick Castle in Warwickshire for a family day inside England’s medieval past. Instead, a stage in the central courtyard blasted pop music so loudly that the children were upset and the castle’s atmosphere vanished. Lady Gaga at full volume finished it. I enjoy spectacle when it makes a fortress feel alive; this felt like history being pushed out of its own courtyard. If you go, I hope you find Warwick on a quieter day.

Preston Tower’s Bedroom Made Defence Feel Domestic I paused beside the narrow window at Preston Tower near Chathill, Northumberland, and this defensive tower suddenly felt domestic. The thick stone and tiny opening still speak of protection, but the room asks smaller questions. A rough bed. Rushes underfoot. A hearth close enough to warm your knees (if not every draught). Even the jug in the window made me wonder who last looked out before pulling the shutter across. I came for a fortress. I left thinking about bedtime.

At Dirleton Castle in East Lothian, the Walls Were a Larder I ducked through the low doorway of Dirleton Castle’s doocot and looked up: more than 1,000 stone nesting boxes circled the walls, once keeping the household supplied with fresh pigeon meat. Outside, it seemed almost plain. Inside, the recesses climbed towards one bright roof opening. A servant reached them using a ladder on a turning central pole. I came for the ruined towers, but this small working building made the castle feel lived in.

Our castle guide became the lunch server I’ve just toured Brancepeth Castle, five miles south-west of Durham, with Richard leading us from the outer stonework through the chapel and down to the cellars. Then he reappeared as barista and lunch server, while Alison’s homemade food completed the visit. That was the magic: a vast private castle, still being restored as a family home, made wonderfully human. I’d return in a heartbeat.

We Paid £150 for Two at Aberdeenshire’s Balmoral Castle I’ve just come back from afternoon tea at Balmoral Castle, the Royal Family’s Highland home in Aberdeenshire, where £75 a head bought a painfully ordinary spread. The guidance suggested women dress for a garden party, so we did. Then we sat among guests in jeans, leggings, trainers and caps, feeling absurdly overdressed as the tiered stand arrived. Neat sandwiches, scones and small cakes—but nothing that made £150 feel sensible (the tartan china was doing most of the work). Save your finery and your money for somewhere that earns both.

Cardiff Castle’s coolest surprise is hidden inside its walls At Cardiff Castle in central Cardiff, tunnels sheltered almost 2,000 people during the Second World War (1939–45). I climb the Norman Keep first, chasing the huge city view in blazing sunshine. Then I step inside the old walls and the temperature drops. The long, dim shelter still has benches and wartime sounds; once, it also held bunks, kitchens, toilets and first-aid posts. That sudden coolness makes the past feel startlingly physical. These walls protected ordinary Cardiff workers and families, not just medieval lords. The £16.50 ticket feels wonderfully well spent. I’d warmly recommend giving yourself time to wander.

Caerphilly Castle Turned Our Family Visit Into an Expedition I’ve just taken my family of four through Caerphilly Castle in South Wales, where Wales’s biggest castle makes medieval life tangible through battlements, narrow spiral stairs and room-by-room displays. The Welsh-dragon audio held everyone’s attention; the ruined kitchen caught mine. After squeezing upwards, we emerged to wide views over the moat and that astonishing leaning tower.
