This weekend, over 1,500 anti-Trump “No Kings” protests are set to take place across the US — coinciding with Trump’s parade for the US Army’s 250th birthday. Organizers are working to ensure peaceful gatherings, but recent anti-ICE clashes and rising tensions raise the stakes.

Meanwhile in Canada, things looked different. Protest activity fell by 31% (it grew by 12% in the US last month) even as the nation held its closely-watched election, which saw the the Liberal Party come from way behind in opinion polls to clinch a minority government win.

🧵What stood out in April? Quite a lot. In a month that saw highest number of protests we've recorded in a day since we started collecting US data in 2020 here’s what we tracked at @ACLEDINFO last month:

This is doubly true when talking about attacks like the one against Shaprio's family, which was carried out by a lone actor. 🧵

Package this with everything else going on (way too much to list), and what we're left with is a much more volatile situation on the whole, making the question "what happens next?" even murkier than it usually is.

I recently had a really engaging Q&A with @Slate Magazine about what @ACLEDINFO data show about violence against elected officials, following the horrific attack against Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro and his family. Thankfully, these incidents remain rare in the US.
