AI is very good at compounding patterns, good or bad. With Silkla.ng, that’s meant CI takes forever because agents want to stress-test every minor feature. And the tricky part is, most of these tests make sense! You can read each one and think, “Yes, reasonable thing to check.” But being reasonable doesn't mean it's worth its CI time. Getting agents to balance those two things has been tricky.
@EffectTS_ amazes me every day, like today when I realized I accidentally wrote good code just because it was naturally the path of least resistance by abstracting Silk's cache storage into a service and it basically gave me the entire basis for remote caching. Entire products are built around this and Silkla.ng got it by accident
to be completely fair though, the contrast check in all terminals I tested skip characters like `╔╦╗`, that are exclusively decorative. The problem is usually with characters that can be used for both purposes, for example, when you making a loading bar with `[====~~]` (let's say you wanted the unloaded part to also be `=`, but dim)
I think he has a point, though. When I was building a TUI library (npmjs.com/package/@term-…), I ran into terminals enforcing minimum contrast on decorative characters that weren’t meant to be read as text. The readability problem is real, but so is the difficulty of building interfaces when terminals reinterpret their colors, especially when that behavior varies between terminals. Low contrast can be intentional, and the terminal doesn’t always have enough context to tell. It’s an awkward spot for the ecosystem: apps don’t consistently respect themes, so terminals compensate, and that introduces another layer of behavior for app developers to account for. A somewhat equivalent siuation would be browsers automatically adjusting CSS colors because some websites choose unreadable combinations. The intention makes sense, but having another layer reinterpret your design in ways that vary across clients can become a maintenance nightmare.

I couldn’t agree more. I’ve also been thinking a lot about what's the purpose of languages today, and what agents need from them. I keep revisiting features I’ve always wanted for Silk and realizing, this makes a workflow more comfortable that might not even exist anymore. LSPs are a good example. I’ve always valued a good LSP, and I still do! But so much of the experience is built around a human typing one letter at a time: speeding that up, helping them navigate, discover the language, understand the project. Agents need that understanding too, arguably even more than we do, but they get there very differently. That probably changes what good tooling should look like. Meanwhile, I have years of opinions about what my language should feel like to use, and my ego would very much like those opinions to remain relevant. Negotiations are ongoing.
