My 4yo has 3 older siblings and if I told her she couldn’t practice her letter sounds and try to read like her older siblings, she would see it as an injustice worthy of calling CPS over!

She and her husband served on the PTA/leadership team, challenged the principal over lunchroom problems, repeatedly pressed the school for Najya’s assessments and work when her performance was in question, got the superintendent involved at one point, contributed money for things like the teachers GoFundMe requests, and generally monitored Najya’s work. What else would you expect an involved parent to do?

NEW: We visited PS 307, the failing public school that Nikole Hannah-Jones sent her daughter to. The teachers make an average of over $100,000 a year. The school spends $52,000 per student each year. The student/teacher ratio is 9 to 1. We went to another school just down the street that spends less than half of what PS 307 does—yet the academic outcomes are significantly better. There was never a time when the U.S. didn’t primarily had state & local control. You could argue that there was more of an effort to establish a shared national identity at points, but I imagine most educators would see this as “indoctrination” these days. Also, it would be difficult to determine if the schools were resulting in shared views or if those came from outside forces (eg war) and that school curriculums reflected outside influences instead.

Learning requires accurate feedback. A couple years ago Najya was getting good grades. The thin veil pulled over the situation said everything is ok. HS proved the grades didn’t actually mean much, and then the most impactful feedback came in the form of a frustrated and betrayed daughter. Hard truths to accept. Hard to reflect on too I imagine.

I’m not sure it is. Everything stated here is true except for 1 aspect of her core premise. NHJ can spend her own resources through donations, use her authority, power and connections, but that’s because they belong to her. She chose to spend Najya’s access to opportunities and resources too though, over whom she is to act as a temporary steward. In this case, wasn’t Najya being used as a means for furthering NHJ ideals?

I’m of the dissenting opinion that almost everybody CAN learn calculus given a long enough period in a supportive environment with the right supports. It’s just a very hard thing to do to align all the variables that go into a person learning something.

I was moved by the piece. I think NHJ was sincere in her beliefs, and sent her child to schools based on those sincere beliefs. She’s now deeply troubled that she may have done the wrong thing. But she still does’t seem to have reconsidered the accuracy of those beliefs. Some

@DuellSays Agreed! And in the long run I’m sure she will be just fine. She has a strong work ethic, supportive family and a strong personal and familial network. That’s more than most. NHJ just seems like a very intelligent, headstrong person who holds fast to some extremely bad premises.

@DuellSays I don’t think her choice is illogical, it’s just communitarian, and as such the rights of the individual (unfortunately in this case the individual she is legally the steward of) were sacrificed on the alter of the public good.

This would require many to believe that non-public school options could offer acceptable alternatives and many are not willing to accept that. One of the premises in the article is that this problem is caused by NYC’s sorting measures (although ironically it also points out that policies targeting students with higher needs often negatively effect higher achieving students).
