I made a quick Summer 2026 IntelliJ Platform roundup for plugin developers.
10 changes in ~5 minutes: native plugin variants, Starter/Driver testing, LSP API renames, Kotlin UI DSL migration, VFS listeners, and more.

Small update, big convenience 👇
🧩 Plugin descriptions can now be edited directly on the plugin's page. The description is stored separately from the plugin archive, so you don't need to upload a new plugin version to update it.

Starting a JetBrains IDE plugin just got simpler.
The new IDE Plugin Generator combines the IDE wizard and the GitHub template into a single flow. Choose features, preview the project, then generate it in IntelliJ IDEA 2026.1+ or your browser.

A blog post about open-sourcing the LSP API in IntelliJ IDEA 2026.2 is live! 🧠
😮 Plot twist: the work is also planned for 2026.1.4 stable, so Android Studio support may arrive earlier than 2026.2.

Too many moving parts in modular @intellijidea plugins? New 🎥: building a plugin with content modules using the IntelliJ Platform Gradle Plugin. Covers optional content modules and gdemos CSS PSI, available for free since 2026.1.

Plugin authors: if you save through VFS and then hand a file path to a CLI, formatter, VCS command, or Java file API, check this.
VFS may see fresh content before the disk does.
If the next reader is outside VFS, flush first.

Stop asking users to paste tokens into plugin settings!
I recorded a video about adding OAuth2 login to JetBrains IDE plugins: browser login, IDE callback, PKCE, PasswordSafe, and GitHub API calls

Accessibility work in JetBrains IDEs continues in 2026: Windows Magnifier support, improved keyboard access to more IDE areas, and Orca support starting with 2026.2.
If these features are part of your daily dev workflow, we’d value your feedback:

Freeze dumps for everyone? Usually no. But when you build plugins for JetBrains IDEs, absolutely yes.
If your plugin causes UI freezes for users, you need the right diagnostics to investigate and fix them. The easiest way to collect reports is the JetBrains Marketplace error reporter, but today it does not expose the freeze dumps it already collects.
If you think plugin developers should have access to that data, please upvote this issue:

Android Studio finally gets embedded browser power 🚀
This is a big unlock for all Android developers and plugin authors!
Embedded web UIs in Android Studio just got a lot more real 👉 tool windows, auth flows, onboarding, browser-powered plugin UX.
Until now, Android Studio has been missing a capability that other JetBrains IDEs already have — JCEF, the embedded web browser.

If you build plugins for JetBrains IDEs, open this before making another icon manually.
It collects practical icon generators for:
👉 IntelliJ-style letter icons
👉 icon modifiers
👉 badge composition for SVGs
Useful, specific, and easy to apply 👇

Many developers care deeply about IDE performance, so we turned an internal post by @knischt into a public one. It covers the architecture behind UI freezes in IntelliJ-based IDEs, what it took to move more work off the UI thread, and the results so far.
