five months ago i’d just given up on making football apps when i tweeted this out. i’d spent 6 months building three different mobile apps, trying to grow a paying subscriber base, adding features and fixes weekly, doing things nobody had tried yet in football, to see if people would value it. they didn’t. i barely slept each day, working late into the night in the hope i’d be able to catch a wave and make a breakthrough so i could support myself. eventually nothing landed, and i had to shut everything down. it was a really disillusioning time for me. it wasn’t my first abject failure in starting my own business, so feeling that pain again was awful. i constantly tried to disguise that pain to those close to me. i decided to give up, and i started applying for jobs again. i was terrified that i’d become unemployable. but first, i thought, i’ve learned a few things and solved some painful problems making these apps… let me at least try to help someone else avoid that pain. i spent a weekend putting together what became the original reep register, entirely based on wikidata, and freely available. i barely had any followers then, much less in football, so i thought nothing of posting it into the void. well, sometimes the wave catches you when you least expect it. @joeladejola saw and retweeted it, then many others. people started commenting, sharing, DMing me, talking about it privately. i received emails and linkedin messages asking about how i’d put it together, about my current job situation, for advice. i didn’t know what to do with it - i am a nobody in football data or analytics - so I kept talking to people and making things I wanted to see more of in the world or would reduce the pain others feel. campos, nutmeg, and football-docs all followed, all free and open source. i wanted to see the tide rise for everyone. i hope i’ve helped everyone who has asked, but it is certainly true a hundred time over that when you are generous, the generosity of others will find you back tenfold. you could say i’m in my manifesting era. so why am i telling you all this? five months later, i find myself - somehow - working in football. i’ve made a dent and i have no plans to stop. if this resonates with you then i want you to know that, what giannis antetokounmpo said is right: working hard towards your goals is never a failure. there are good days and bad days (fuck em), but you have to learn and leave your ego behind. i will fail again, i’m sure of that, but if every conversation or chance to show myself increases the surface area of luck i live with, then waves will be caught. if you needed to hear this, i wish the same for you. i’m immensely grateful to everyone who has been generous with this fool. tomorrow brings something i never imagined would happen 6 months ago, let alone last week. i’m really excited to share it with you. the world is both weird and awesome, i’m glad we’re all in it. until then, you know where to find me. 🏄

matching player IDs across opta, transfermarkt, fbref, fotmob and 25+ other football data providers sucks. spreadsheets, fuzzy matching, hallucinated IDs. the reep register fixes this: an open source crosswalk of 430k players and 45k teams across all of them. updated weekly.

The support from you guys has been incredible. I wasn't aware of the actual influence of Playerprint and how much people actually enjoyed using it. I am now even more motivated to find a solution and come back stronger. If there are any early stage data companies who would like to team up for the betterment of the community, feel free to reach out to me via DMs or at [email protected] Shares and retweets appreciated.

Footverse v3 is live. Funny how it comes full circle. Footverse was the project that gave me my big break, and I've spent the last few months rebuilding it from the ground up. v3 is a complete redesign with a lot more under the hood. footverse.sahilgdwn.workers.dev Tour below 🧵
