This is a non-exhaustive list, and I would love to hear if people think there are other kinds of AI users/non-users that they have come across. I must also note that I understand that these positions can shift with circumstances, more information, time, technological improvement, political changes, and so on. After all, a person might oppose AI-generated art but depend on agents at work. They might welcome medical applications and progress but worry about bioweapons. I would not call this hypocrisy or think people must at all times put themselves in a category or box, but I think it is super important that people are always listening, learning, debating, and continuing to have the freedom to choose!

The Gatekeepers: I say “the” because I wish to call this category out. These are people who conceal their AI use out of shame or fear. That hesitation has some empirical grounding. For example, in Microsoft and LinkedIn’s 2024 survey, 52% of workplace AI users were reluctant to admit using it for their most important tasks. Concealment, however, does not tell us what someone believes about AI. 9. AI Natives: These are people who are hopeful and the most enthusiastic about AI. They often talk about AI 24/7 and use it throughout the day. They often have their agents running and doing chores at all times and never miss the chance to call themselves “AI Native.”

There Are Nine Types of People Based on How They Use or Reject AI. Which One Are You? I was recently thinking about how Luddites and Doomers are not the same kind of people. While they both might be extremely skeptical about the future and concerned about AI catastrophe, they do not interact with AI in the same way, nor do they think about similar problems. So I thought it would be a fun exercise to map out the different kinds of people who use AI, based on how skeptical or enthusiastic they are about the technology and how often they use or do not use it. Fundamentally, I think how people think about AI and how they engage with it do not always align, and I wanted to chart out the different kinds of AI users and non-users. (See figure below.)
