Yeah GAP insurance would be needed to cover the difference between the. Car value and the loan. The lenders contribute to this by having low or no down payments and now even 7 or 8 year car loans. Both of these cause the car to be “upside down” early in the loan term.

Here’s something I’ve learned: “Getting by” can take a hell of a lot more work than getting ahead. If you’re constantly making excuses, changing stories, cutting corners or trying to remember what you told someone six months ago, you’re basically building a house of cards. And then spending your time hoping nobody bumps the table. There’s a much simpler approach. Do what’s right because it’s right. Tell the truth. Keep your word. Own it when you screw up. Treat people fairly. Then there’s nothing to keep straight. Nothing to cover up. Nothing you need to explain away later. You can put all that energy into moving forward instead. That’s a pretty damn good definition of getting ahead.

Then the settlement arrived—and it was less than the remaining loan balance. A standard auto policy generally pays a totaled vehicle’s actual cash value, not necessarily what you still owe. If the loan or lease balance is higher, you may be responsible for the difference.
