Direct Instruction I know, definitions are *boring* but it's worth just being clear about this. 'Direct Instruction' with a capital 'D' and a capital 'I' generally refers to the programs developed by Zig Engelmann, Doug Carnine and others and available from McGraw Hill. These are modern versions of the programs tested in Project Follow Through. Teachers follow a script that includes the students' opportunities to respond. The programs can be used in small groups or whole classes. For example, at my school, we teach Spelling Mastery to all students in regular English classrooms, but we use the other programs for small group sessions with our Progress Support Team. The materials are quite costly. So, there's a business idea for someone who can devise something of the same quality. Direct Instruction is therefore a highly specific kind of explicit teaching. Confusingly, explicit teaching is often called 'direct instruction' with a lower case 'd' and 'i' and that's why I avoid this term.

This has always been the WA Democrats' plan. Multiple elected Democrats have said it publicly. The Left media just doesn't usually report it. The Ferguson-Pedersen state income tax scheme is NOT a "millionaire's tax." The ones who call it that are lying. And they know they are.

Rep. Cindy Ryu told KUOW the income-tax threshold should be lowered to around $250,000. They are selling this as a “millionaire” tax, obviously just to get the ruling they want from the state Supreme Court: that income is not property (!). Once they get that ruling, look out

1️⃣ @GovBobFerguson said no new taxes. 2️⃣ Bob signs new income tax…. “But it only impacts the millionaires” 3️⃣ WA Dems… I know we said millionaires, but “Families can do well off $250,000, so we need to lower the threshold.”

Thank you Thurston County judge. This law signed by Ferguson is why I will never again vote for a Democrat while I live in Washington State.

Big win for local voters. A Thurston County judge ruled Friday that the Legislature cannot empower a state commission to remove a duly elected sheriff. The law is Senate Bill 5974, which Gov. Ferguson signed in April. Pierce County Sheriff Keith Swank, who attended the hearing,

🚨🏠👀 OH BROTHER…THIS ONE CAUGHT MY EYE 👁️! One Kent address. Two childcare businesses. Same location. And the Washington State Open Checkbook shows: 💰 $2,498,639 in state payments 🤣BRIGHT FUTURE EARLY LEARNING PROGRAM LLC 2021–23: $30,407 2023–25: $535,868 2025–27 to date: $648,796 Total: $1,215,071 🤣AMIRA CHILDCARE LLC 2023–25: $363,193 2025–27 to date: $920,375 Total: $1,283,568 🔥 COMBINED: $2.499 MILLION And the 2025–27 payments shown so far average roughly $112,084/month combined. The licensing records shown also list family-child-care capacity, but capacity is NOT the same thing as actual enrollment, so that's the next question I want answered. How many children were actually being served—and how do these payments break down child-by-child and month-by-month? Records first. Questions second. 👀 🧵 #Washington #WAState #ChildCare #OpenCheckbook #KentWA #DCYF #TurnSeattleRed

Wait, what?

I’m at Superior Court in Thurston county listening to arguments for and against SB5974 before the judge rules. A majority of the arguments are regarding “hate groups” affiliation. An example of a hate group, and this should scare every one of you, is if you belong to a house

@JonOwenDI I really hope this has the same, or stronger reach as Sold A Story. Also, I want to come work with/ for you. Please DM me & we can open a dialogue.

I taught these three words today. I'd consider these words of high utility and ones students should have a solid grasp of before entering middle school.

People will happily commit their children to professional sports and coaches who require hours of repeated drills and practice. But when it comes to math, suddenly we hear that “too much practice” is a bad thing. If athletes want to develop automaticity, they practice the skill repeatedly. If we want a student to develop automaticity in math, we ALSO need them to practice the skill repeatedly. Practice isn’t the enemy to be avoided. Practice is how skills become automatic.

I dropped my daughter off at a sleepover and went home to finish some work. Around 11pm, she texted me: "Dad, did you feed the fish?" We don't have a fish. That was our code. "Fish" means: "Come get me, don't ask questions here." I grabbed my keys and drove straight over. When I got there, I told the other parents she'd forgotten she had an early appointment tomorrow morning. She grabbed her bag, thanked them, and got in the car. On the way home, she told me what actually happened. The girls had started passing around someone's older brother's Instagram messages, planning to prank call a boy from their grade and record his reaction to post online. She didn't want to be there when it happened, and didn't want to explain that to a room full of girls who thought it was funny. I told her: "You don't owe anyone an explanation for leaving," and she fell asleep in the car before we even got home. Kids should always have a way out of a situation that doesn't feel right, no interrogation required, no story owed to anyone but the parent picking them up.

@VinceBoley Have him write dictated words, based on vowel sounds.I do havesome resources. Have them notice/ know all the ways to spell specific sounds.

drives me crazy that everyone's always talking about the decision to "accelerate" students as if you need a new theory of child development, reams of evidence, & Ouija board take it from @justinskycak : "the ONLY question here is: have they mastered the prerequisites?"

Some parents worry: if my kid gets really accelerated, really ahead in math, will they have knowledge gaps? Will it hurt them socially? What do they do when they run out of math? Do they just sit there bored? But thing is, rapid acceleration in math is not bad for kids.

@SoLInTheWild If students don't enter silently, I have them go out and enter again. Yesterday, I felt so mean at the beginning of the day. By the end of tge day, things were good.

Social Security in WA State — now taxable, thank you Jamie Did you know that under the new unconstitutional income tax in WA state there is no exemption for social security so your social security income and benefits (anything that is reported on your federal AGI) is now subject to taxation by the state? There is not enough money in the world to satisfy the greedy spenders in Olympia or their public union sock puppet masters. Vote Yes on I-645 to Repeal the Unconstitutional Income Tax

@_CameronLane Connection is what is often missing in modern life. Deep, real vulnerable sharing.

@KurtSupeCPA I really enjoy your posts. I've recently rediscovered faith and have a new relationship aligned with that faith. I have been saving for years. Now, I am prioritizing faith, family, friends, relationships and new adventures.

Just had the creepiest scam ever happen 20 minutes ago. I got a call from my wife telling me she forgot her wallet and needed the credit card to pay for her gas. Except my wife was at home with me, and drives a Tesla. Same voice, bit... off, weird cadence but 100% sounded just like her. If she wasn't there, and it wasn't about gas I would have fallen for it. I entertained it for awhile to get more out of it, I was so confused. Must be some sort of voice deepfake. The responses were too fast for ai, I think it was a voice filter. I wish I had thought to record it. The future is about to get fucked. Warn your loved ones, do verbal passwords with your kids. Bit taken aback

I feel like a lot of people don't understand the purpose of grades. If a student scores a 40% on a test, then gets a second attempt using the first test as an answer key and earns 100%, this is not only disengenuous to parents but also unhelpful for teachers. Grades should communicate to a teacher what a students have mastered and what needs to be retaught. I genuinely don’t understand why this practice has become so common. Is there really that much pressure to inflate grades?
