I wasn’t in a great mood earlier today. But a simple moment changed that. I Was at the grocery store this afternoon and an older gentleman parked next to me. We both have Purple Heart plates. He pointed at mine. “When?” He asked “Afghanistan 2011,” I replied. “You?” “Vietnam, 1968.” Then he shook my hand, and we talked about our service for a little bit. At the end he gave me a salute and said, “Make sure you have a great life. You’ve earned it.” And then we went about our days. It completely changed the tone of my day.

My mom called me this week. "Sweetheart, I'm falling behind on the property tax. It jumped almost $1,300, from $5,900 to $7,200 this year. Didn't they say it couldn't go up like this? Is yours doing the same thing? I don't understand it. Feels like they want us gone." My mom is 74. Lives on Social Security and a small pension. Been in that house since 1997. Paid off for over fifteen years. And she owes over $7,000 a year or the county takes it. This is criminal.
