So Braverman is correct that she is not ethnically "English". As a 'national identity', it is your choice. You do not have to consider yourself "English" if you were

You keep trying to redefine ethnicity as genetic ancestry, when the actual UK statistical and healthcare systems explicitly don't do that. Genetic ancestry and ethnicity are not interchangeable. Genomic medicine may be interested in someone's actual genetic variants or ancestry, but NHS public-health data explicitly uses ethnicity to identify disparities in access, treatment and health outcomes. NHS England says robust ethnicity data is "critical" for identifying and addressing health inequalities. Ethnic health inequalities can arise from things such as language barriers, deprivation, discrimination, mistrust and differences in access to healthcare — none of which requires a genetic explanation. Indeed, if ethnicity were merely a proxy for genetics, there would be little point in NHS England insisting that ethnicity should be self-defined and recorded according to ethnic identity.

You're conflating ethnicity with genetics and nationality. They're not the same thing. More importantly, if ethnicity is NOT important or significant, why does the ONS routinely publish ethnic-group data on differences in health, education, employment and housing, and why does NHS England say robust ethnicity data is critical for identifying health inequalities? england.nhs.uk/long-read/ethn… And nobody said Caribbean was a nationality 🤦. It's an ethnicity. That is what we are talking about here! And who are you to tell anyone that their Caribbean (or African or Asian) ethnicity is 'meaningless'? Or is it only "English" ethnicity that you have the problem with?

This is factually incorrect. Both of the Sussex children have dual British-American citizenship - due to their place of birth and their parents' nationality. But birthplace does not determine British citizenship under current UK law. Unrestricted jus soli was abolished on 1 January 1983. If neither of your parents is a British citizen or 'settled' in the UK, you are not automatically a British citizen just because you were born here. So a child born in the UK to two American parents (neither of whom is a British citizen or has settled status) is an American citizen but not a British citizen.

You're introducing a genealogical test that nobody was using in the original discussion. You've shifted the goalposts from "does an English ethnic category exist?" to "can you construct an absolutely pure English ancestry?" Those are completely different propositions. I have to say "Ethnicity is meaningless because ancestry is complicated" is an interesting proposition. Presumably that means we should also abandon the ethnic data routinely used to identify racial and ethnic disparities in health, education, employment and other outcomes? And if ethnicity is "meaningless" to the people of these islands, presumably we can also scrap the Notting Hill Carnival, which has its roots in London's Caribbean community and celebrates Caribbean culture and identity. Or perhaps ethnicity isn't meaningless after all — perhaps you're only declaring it meaningless when it doesn't support the argument you're making.

In terms of government recording: people identifying with the White: English ethnic group. Being born in England, holding British citizenship, speaking English or choosing "English" as your national identity does not turn a person of a different ethnic group into ethnically English. That's why saying "I was born here, therefore I'm English" doesn't answer the point about ethnicity — it answers a different question. And is the reason why Gary here, and Suella, can be British citizens and be English or British by national identity (although they could choose not to be) but - unless you are suggesting that either of them would wish to deny their heritage or their skin colour and pretend to be White - they are not *ethnically* English. I'm really not sure why this is suddenly being portrayed as "racist"?

So again, there is no legal status of "English" or "English citizen". Anyone who is a citizen in the UK holds "British" citizenship. Whether you choose to identify yourself as 'British' or 'English', or both, or neither, as your 'national identity' is self-determined. If you worked in Spain for a few months and had a child while you were working there, your child would not be Spanish just because they were born there 🤦
