📍@UNEP 12th Annual Subcommittee meeting At the Official Opening, we delivered a statement on behalf of the Local Authorities Major Group, putting forward 10 concrete proposals for stronger local pathways. 🌍 Regional priorities require multilevel governance. And UNEP’s impact must be measured where people live and work. Let’s move from consultation to co-creation, from participation to partnership, and from recognition to institutionalized multilevel governance.

As recalled at #COP17, #LRGs are 🔑 to achieve land restoration, biodiversity conservation, climate resilience & water security. Not only as implementers, but as co-creators. 🌏This is why climate is one of the 8 pillars of UCLG’s Local Social Covenant: t.ly/M_xBJ

About 30 mayors and regional leaders adopted the Ulaanbaatar Declaration. The declaration makes 5 calls to action, the central one being that cities and regions want a structured, ongoing role in the @unccd rather than a seat at the table every 2 years. unccd.int/news-stories/p…

🟢 #Listen2Cities at #COP17 “🏛️Participation must go beyond access. #LRGs should not simply be beneficiaries or implementers of an agenda designed elsewhere. They need to be partners in shaping it. 🌐This is also why the @GlobalTaskforce is important: it allows our constituency to bring together experiences and priorities from cities and regions across the world and bring them collectively into global policy processes such as the @UNCCD and the RAA.” @UCLGAfrica President Oumar Ba at today’s flagship event co-hosted by Riyadh Action Agenda at #UNCCDCOP17

🟢 #Listen2Cities at #COP17 “🌲Land is at the center of our livelihoods, but land is beyond urban–land is also rural. 🌐#UNCCDCOP17 Mayors’ Forum is the center of the discussion because cities collect our people and are where our future grows. This Forum needs to show the world that UNCCD starts politically from the ground up. 🖋️There is understanding of responsibility at the local level, and that what is discussed on paper will also go down to the vulnerable people we are serving on the ground.” 💬 Ms. Yasmine Fouad, @UNCCD Executive Secretary 📷: Kiara Worth/UNFCC/Abos Africa
