As Chair of the APPG on Kashmir, together with over 50 Parliamentarians , we have written to the Foreign Secretary regarding the current situation in Azad Jammu and Kashmir. We are deeply concerned about the serious escalation in tensions in particular the recent reports of live fire resulting in deaths and injuries. Many British Kashmiris are concerned about the safety and welfare of their families causing real anxiety and distress across our communities. The UK Government should use all appropriate diplomatic channels to support immediate de-escalation and a peaceful resolution through table talks at the heart of which must remain the inalienable human rights of Kashmiris.

A second motion is being put forward by Councillors Bamford and Khizer on escalating violence in the Kashmir region, amid reports of violence and protests.

The cllrs note that around 6 – 7% of the borough’s residents have Kashmiri heritage who have contacted them to express their fears and concerns for their family who live in the region.

The motion asks that a number of actions are taken, including that the council writes to the prime minister and foreign secretary requesting that the govt uses its influence to encourage the govts of Azad Jammu and Kashmir to de-escalate tensions.

The motion has been carried.

UK: Major move by Rochdale Council, resolution passed in support of Kashmiris The Rochdale Council in the UK passed a resolution on the evening of July 16, 2026, regarding the current situation in Pakistan-administered Jammu & Kashmir. The resolution was moved by Liberal Democrat Councillor Mohammed Khizar, representing Falinge, Belfield, and Smallbridge. The resolution demands that the Rochdale Council write to the British government, urging the Foreign Office and the incoming Prime Minister to initiate immediate negotiations with the governments of Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Jammu & Kashmir to take effective measures to resolve the humanitarian crisis that has been ongoing for the past forty days. The resolution was supported by other political parties during the session, while the Reform and Conservative parties did not support it. This is a great piece. Thank you @FraserNelson for this thoughtful and nuanced contribution. An iftar event open to all communities in the spirit of sharing has been weaponised as part of the ‘ongoing culture wars’ where Muslims are vilified if they engage publicly and vilified for not engaging enough. Minorities who have experienced marginalisation and persecution understand where such vilification leads and it is heartening to see solidarity across faiths as well as from people who appreciate the importance of defending pluralism regardless of background.
