At Crossroads, he and Dr. Mike met with people in treatment to share that recovery is possible. At another stop, a portrait of his late brother, Chris Farley, became a moment to reflect on loss and connection, surrounded by the recovery community. Every August 31, International Overdose Awareness Day (IOAD) brings a global community together to take action on overdose. For 25 years, communities have organized to remember those we’ve lost and to take action to save lives. The truth is, we shouldn’t still need this day. But we do. In 2024, the CDC estimated 80,391 drug overdose deaths in the United States, a decrease of 26.9% from the 110,037 deaths in 2023. This is the lowest number of projected deaths since 2019.
