SCIENTISTS FIND A CLUE INSIDE THE HUMAN BRAIN What if a supplement commonly used by athletes to build muscle could also influence the way your brain produces energy? Scientists are beginning to explore this unexpected possibility, and a small human study involving people with Alzheimer’s disease has produced some intriguing results. Creatine is usually associated with gyms, strength training, and athletic performance. But your brain also relies on creatine to maintain a rapid energy reserve. Inside brain cells, the creatine–phosphocreatine system helps regenerate ATP, the molecule that powers essential cellular activities. When energy demand increases, this system can help cells respond quickly. Researchers gave 20 people with Alzheimer’s disease 20 grams of creatine monohydrate daily for eight weeks. When they examined the participants’ brains, they found that total brain creatine had increased by approximately 11%. But that was not the only finding that caught their attention. Participants also showed improvements in several cognitive tests, including overall thinking ability, working memory, reading, and attention. Additional measurements revealed increases in cellular ATP and ADP, molecules involved in the brain’s energy processes. These findings raise an important question: Could improving energy availability inside brain cells help address some of the problems associated with Alzheimer’s disease? The question matters because Alzheimer’s is linked to disruptions in mitochondrial function and brain energy metabolism. As brain cells struggle to maintain their energy demands, researchers are investigating whether alternative energy-supporting mechanisms could play a role. Creatine might offer one possible pathway. By helping cells store and access energy more efficiently, it could potentially support brain function under certain conditions. But the real mystery is whether these short-term biological changes can translate into meaningful protection against long-term cognitive decline. There is an important limitation that should not be overlooked. The study involved only 20 participants, lasted eight weeks, and did not include a placebo control group. Therefore, researchers cannot establish that creatine itself caused the cognitive improvements. The claim that creatine slows cognitive decline by 30% is not demonstrated by this study. This research does not prove that creatine can prevent or treat Alzheimer’s disease. Instead, it offers an early scientific clue about a substance already widely studied in muscle biology that may also influence energy processes in the human brain. The next step is clear: larger, randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trials will be needed to determine whether creatine can produce lasting cognitive benefits. A supplement once associated mainly with physical strength may be opening a new line of investigation into one of the brain’s most complex diseases.
