“Why did we choose this supplier?” If the answer disappears when the buyer leaves the project, part of the organization’s procurement knowledge leaves with them.
When was the last time your procurement team and your finance team actually agreed on a number without three follow up meetings?
Supplier data has a shelf life. Capacity, pricing, lead times, quality and communication can all change faster than the supplier profile sitting in the system.
Every procurement decision looks simple in hindsight and complicated in the moment. That gap is basically the whole job.
Procurement flexibility comes from having real options. Alternative suppliers matter, but so do current information, visible trade offs and enough context to decide quickly.
If your procurement process still depends on one person remembering to follow up, that's not a process. That's a single point of failure with a job title.
Procurement can add far more value when it helps shape a decision instead of being brought in only to execute it.

@DeItaone Worth remembering this stacks on top of duties that were already there, so the number in the headline is never the number you pay.
Most of the pain here will not land on the companies that buy rare earths directly. It lands two or three tiers down, on the people who have no idea a sub supplier of theirs depends on a single Chinese shipment until the line stops. Now is a good week to ask your suppliers what their own inputs depend on.

Collaboration in procurement is not about adding more people to the process. It is about involving the right people early enough for their input to still change the outcome.
