Where does your college stand? The university map covers 1,557 four-year schools on two questions: how well each could absorb a hit to enrollment or revenue, and how its graduates do. Refreshed this week with the newest IPEDS and College Scorecard data. kylesaunders.com/university-map/

University of Tulsa just cut its sticker price from $54,672 to $25,000. Coe College went from $58,780 to $31,850, a 45% cut. For decades, colleges raised tuition faster than almost any price in the economy, more than tripling it even after inflation, because federal student loans guaranteed someone would always pay. Hand any industry a blank government check and the price never stops climbing. The check is getting pulled, and the sticker prices are coming down with it. About time.

The University of Minnesota plans to cut its budget by $225 million or “12-15% of allocated operating revenue” over the next two years. It cites “shifting enrollment trends, unpredictable state and federal funding, and rising costs.” “These issues are part of long-term sector trends that will continue for the foreseeable future. This is not a temporary change — this is an institutional inflection point that asks us to think about our work in new and bolder ways.” “While we have already engaged in difficult scope and budget reduction strategies in recent years, we need to do more to secure our future in the face of ongoing headwinds and operating expenses that outpace operating revenues across our university. This next phase requires deliberate choices about how to reduce expenses and redundancy while we simplify and focus how we work across both our administrative and academic portfolios.” “Every unit across all campuses and all locations will be doing this work. We know this reduction, coupled with a new planning process, involves significant change and creates uncertainty.”

The ‘enrollment cliff’ is here. America’s 18-24 population is projected to shrink by roughly 2.5 million over the next decade. Expect many college closings and program downsizing. In some regions, the shakeout will be brutal.

Same census week. Opposite ends of demand. GW Fall 2026: enrollment ~−6.7% (largest drop since 2020); ~1,000 fewer international students. gwhatchet.com/2026/09/21/gra…

What to watch in the file: apps ≠ deposits. Yield, net price by income, discount rate, intl share — and FSA nonpayment rates next to Scorecard debt/earnings. Schools that publish those numbers first will be easier to trust when the funnel gets uglier.

Adaptation — rewrite the price. Tulsa: UG tuition+fees $54,000 → $25,000 Fall 2027, locked four years. utulsa.edu/access-to-exce… Carleton: no-loan Fall 2027 for need-based aid (no income band). 2026–27 avg award $71,866 → avg aided family pays $21,763. carleton.edu/news/stories/c…

Three enrollment stories this week. Same funnel. Different endings. Schools without excess demand — yield that clears without buying the class — are cutting headcount, cutting price, or both. Reputation doesn't deposit.
