Nodes can and will pause if there is something wrong with the Native Layer 1s we support, like LTC having the reorg issue a few months ago (which caused the solvency checker to fire as under 1k went missing from a vault) The devs have no control over the network, the quorum of the Node Operators is what determines THORChain's destiny.

The fact that NEAR could freeze funds proves that it is not decentralized enough. Anytime a single actor can censor a transaction on a platform that platform is not decentralized enough. We shouldn't be surprised at NEAR's actions to freeze funds. People will generally do what is in their self-interest. In this case, NEAR's self-interest is compliance to please government regulators. That's why the concept of decentralization has always been one of the core tenants of cryptocurrency. Decentralization make it impossible for governments, custodians, or bad-actors to limit or steal from others. So NEAR isn't decentralized in the sense that the Crypto currency community understands that term - they are misusing it. They may actually be seeking to change the commonly understood meaning of the term which is pretty deplorable.

My take on the whole Near privacy vs permissioned drama: We have had hardcore cypherpunk systems in crypto for decades. That has been the entire ethos of this industry, and they has taken us this far. We have the fruits of that experiment. We also have the scars, too. Incredible amounts of lost funds, North Korean exploits, user harm, etc. A new experiment, one where we can discern between good and bad and take action as a result, is worth having. Spare me the slippery slope of "but all our freedoms will be threatened!" We still have the maximally permissionless systems too - you can use those.

If you don’t want to provide a service - no problem. But if you accept a transaction, start execution, take custody of the assets, then refuse to fulfill your side and demand additional actions before returning them - that’s exactly the kind of power crypto was supposed to eliminate. $NEAR Intents is censorable. They just demonstrated they can stop transactions mid-execution and freeze funds. Today they freeze a hacker. Tomorrow they can freeze you and demand KYC, proof of funds, or whatever else before giving you access back. The reason for censorship is irrelevant. What matters is that the capability exists. If someone can decide whether you are allowed to move your money, you don’t have permissionless money. You have money by permission. Hold unstoppable $ZEC , be careful with exchangers like @NEARProtocol

NEAR is permissionless programmable money. Permissionless means nobody needs permission to own and transfer assets, or deploy contracts on NEAR. It does not mean every application or liquidity provider must process every transaction. SHIELD is how NEAR Intents applies this in
