THE 47TH PROPOSITION OF EUCLID Among the enduring emblems by which Freemasonry has expressed its reverence for geometry and disciplined reason, the Forty-Seventh Proposition of Euclid occupies a distinguished place. The proposition concerns the right-angled triangle, and declares that the square constructed upon its longest side is equal in area to the two squares constructed upon the remaining sides. In familiar mathematical form, a^2 + b^2 = c^2. Number and geometrical form here reveal the same proportion under different expressions, and the human intellect is capable of discerning the law which governs them. Its Hermetic significance arises from this intelligibility of nature. The heavens, the proportions of bodies, the motions of celestial spheres, and the structures discovered by geometry all testify to a cosmos governed by relation, measure, and law. Number gives these relations abstract expression; geometry gives them visible form. Together they furnish the mind with instruments by which the order of creation may be contemplated. From this conception of natural law proceeds the moral lesson. Man belongs to the same ordered universe which he studies. His conduct therefore possesses measure, consequence, and proper relation. Justice establishes due proportion between persons; temperance governs appetite by measure; fortitude preserves order within the soul; prudence discerns the proper relation between means and ends. The Forty-Seventh Proposition thus becomes a fitting Masonic emblem of cosmic and moral order: a geometrical truth through which the mind perceives law in nature, and from that law derives a pattern for the disciplined government of life.

Who should seriously consider Universal Co-Masonry? The person drawn toward Freemasonry should possess a settled desire for disciplined self-development and a willingness to give sustained labor to that purpose. The Craft speaks most clearly to those who find meaning in symbol, moral philosophy, spiritual inquiry, fraternity, service, and the patient study of man’s duties toward God, his fellow beings, and himself. Its work requires seriousness of character. It asks for tolerance joined with conviction, liberty of conscience governed by discipline, an earnest search after Truth, and the willingness to meet others upon the Level in a spirit of equality and fraternity. Its lessons are cultivated through study, reflection, ceremonial work, regular attendance, and service to Humanity. A passing curiosity may draw the eye toward the Temple; the proper candidate approaches its door with the intention to labor, to learn, and to place what he learns into practice. THE LIGHT Among the most enduring emblems of Freemasonry is Light, whereby knowledge is joined unto moral responsibility. The lamp is of little value whilst the eye refuses to behold that which its flame reveals. When light falls upon the plan, the mason perceives the design; when it passes over the surface of the stone, every uneven place, false angle, and unfinished portion declares itself unto the sight. Thus illumination has a severe as well as a beneficent office. Shadow may conceal defect for a season, yet the lamp discovers the true condition of the work and thereby renders correction possible. The clearer the sight, the greater becomes the obligation to labour according to what has been seen. So also in human character. Knowledge reveals consequence, proportion, duty, and fault. It gives the mind a clearer plan whereby conduct may be measured and the rough places of the moral nature brought beneath discipline. Greater knowledge, rightly received, increases duty.

Rising from the darkness below, the Philosophical Tree reveals the whole journey of transformation. At its roots is the black crow, the sign of Nigredo, where the old form is broken down and reduced to its most basic state. From that darkness the tree begins to grow, teaching that transformation does not begin by escaping what is low or impure, but by working directly with it. On the trunk appear Salt, Sulphur, and Mercury: Salt is the body and what remains fixed, Sulphur is the fiery power that drives change, and Mercury is the moving spirit that connects one state to another. These three are the foundation of the Work, and they must learn to act as one. The two lions guard the next mystery. The lion without wings represents what is fixed, heavy, and bound to the earth, while the winged lion represents what is volatile, light, and able to rise. Around them are Fire, Air, Water, and Earth, showing that the alchemist must bring the basic forces of Nature into order. Higher on the tree, the Sun and Moon reveal the great union of opposites: active and receptive, masculine and feminine, light and reflection. The stars above show that this transformation belongs to a larger cosmic pattern. At the very top stands the white bird, the purified spirit that has risen above the darkness from which the Work began. The deeper message is this: the Great Work is not about becoming something foreign to yourself. It is about taking everything within you that is divided, wounded, unstable, instinctive, earthly, and unfinished, and bringing it into one conscious order. The darkness at the root and the white bird at the summit belong to the same tree. The lower state is not your enemy; it is the raw material of your higher state. True transformation happens when nothing within you is wasted, because even your chaos can become the substance of your awakening. Freemasonry begins with an act of the will. Those who seek admission must do so “of their own free will and accord.” The desire for membership must arise within the applicant, and the decision to knock upon the door must be his or her own. This principle belongs to the moral character of the Craft. A serious obligation derives its dignity from liberty. The individual who freely chooses a discipline assumes responsibility for that choice, and enters upon its labors with an understanding that no compulsion can supply. THE MOSAIC PAVEMENT Among the most familiar images associated with Freemasonry is the black-and-white mosaic pavement, whose ordered alternation of light and dark presents to the contemplative mind a grave and fitting emblem of human life. Across that figured floor the eye passes continually from brightness into shadow, from shadow again into brightness, and learns thereby to consider how gain and loss, joy and sorrow, action and consequence are interwoven within the common course of mortal experience. Its force lies in the pattern. Each part receives its place within a measured whole, and the apparent opposition of the several squares is governed by proportion, boundary, and order. So likewise must a man preserve the rule of his conduct amid the shifting conditions of fortune. Prosperity demands restraint; adversity demands fortitude; opportunity demands judgment; consequence demands reflection. The moral law loses nothing of its authority because the circumstances beneath our feet have changed. The pavement may therefore be contemplated under many aspects, and no single interpretation need exhaust its meaning. Its enduring lesson is architectural and ethical: life proceeds across a floor of alternation, and wisdom consists in maintaining measured movement through both light and shadow, preserving integrity while the pattern changes beneath our steps.

Freemasonry asks a certain seriousness of character in those who seek admission. Our Declaration of Principles speaks of upright character, maturity, sound judgment, strict morals, honor, and probity. These are the qualities we hope to find in an applicant. Such language does not describe perfection. It describes a person whose conduct shows moral steadiness, whose judgment has been formed by reflection, and whose life gives evidence of sincerity, discipline, and self-command. The work of the Lodge calls for people prepared to take truth, duty, and fraternity in earnest. Before applying, it is wise to examine one’s motives carefully.
