Are hurricanes really becoming more frequent or intense as the planet warms? Physicist Ralph B. Alexander examines the observational record — global hurricanes, typhoons, North Atlantic storms and landfalling hurricanes. His conclusion: the data show no long-term increase in hurricane frequency. Some records even show declines. RCP8.5 was once widely used as a “business-as-usual” pathway. Today, such extremely high-emission futures are widely regarded as implausible. Yet the scary headlines live on. The UK Met Office has now produced a fictional 2056 weather forecast with temperatures reaching 45°C, calling such conditions “scientifically plausible”. @CMorrisonEsq asks the crucial question: what assumptions underpin this frightening vision of the future — and why are extreme climate scenarios still being presented to the public as plausible outcomes? Marcel Crok ontkent de opwarming niet. Niet dat CO₂ een broeikasgas is. En ook niet dat de mens bijdraagt aan de opwarming. Maar waaruit blijkt dan de klimaatcrisis? Voor veel vormen van extreem weer is wereldwijd geen duidelijke stijgende trend zichtbaar. De klimaatschade stijgt in dollars, maar niet wanneer die wordt afgezet tegen de enorme groei van bevolking en welvaart. En de sterfte door extreem weer is in een eeuw met circa 98% gedaald. Crok, medeoprichter en directeur van Stichting Clintel, zet de feiten op een rij in een essay dat hij op verzoek schreef voor Liberaal Kompas van de TeldersStichting, het wetenschappelijk bureau van de VVD. Dit artikel laat eigenlijk precies zien waarom Clintel bestaat: als klimaatwaakhond feiten, aannames en voorspellingen uit elkaar houden en voortdurend toetsen of het dominante klimaatnarratief overeenkomt met de waarnemingen. Twenty years after An Inconvenient Truth, Al Gore insists climate scientists were “absolutely correct” — and blames fossil-fuel resistance for slowing the renewable transition. Eric Worrall sees a very different reality. Wind and solar produce electricity when the weather allows, not necessarily when people and industry need it. Even heavily equipped homes still need the grid at times. Scale that problem to an entire industrial economy and reliability, backup and costs become impossible to ignore. Worrall’s point: you cannot run a modern civilization on an energy supply that keeps letting you down — and Germany shows what happens when unreliable, expensive energy collides with economic reality.

Why is the West pursuing a Net Zero strategy that appears to strengthen its biggest industrial competitor? @JoanneNova examines the argument by Michael Doran and Brenda Shaffer. The logic is striking: the US and Europe restrict their own fossil-fuel production and increasingly rely on wind, solar, batteries, critical minerals and EVs — supply chains in which China holds dominant positions. Meanwhile, China keeps adding energy: coal, oil and gas alongside wind, solar and nuclear. Doran and Shaffer argue that the result is an extraordinary asymmetry: the West “subtracts” reliable domestic energy while China “adds” energy and industrial capacity — and sells the West much of the technology required for its transition. Nova asks the uncomfortable next question: given how much China benefits, how much influence does Beijing have on the Western Net Zero movement? Not proof of a grand conspiracy — but, she argues, a question worth investigating.

Dat is de kracht van welvaart, adaptatie, betere infrastructuur en waarschuwing.
