New wild cat species discovered! 🐈 A spotted cat from the forests of Bolivia has been confirmed as a new species, Leopardus tilcayo, marking the first description of a new living cat species in more than a century. Only one confirmed living individual is currently known: a 10-year-old cat nicknamed “Tigrino,” which lives at a rescue sanctuary in Bolivia. Found in the forest by a local resident who initially mistook it for a domestic kitten, Tigrino grew up to reveal striking differences from a house cat, including its behavior and appearance.

A remote-sensing application platform established by China's Supreme People's Procuratorate now serves nearly 400 procuratorates at the prefectural level and above to retrieve and view satellite images of sites of reported pollution and environmental damage. The platform has so far processed more than 10,000 satellite image scenes, helping prosecutors to more efficiently verify leads, assess ecological damage and corroborate evidence from multiple sources for environmental public interest litigation. Yangtze finless porpoise: A window into a Wuhan's ecological success On Sept. 19, mayors from various countries attending the 2026 Global Mayors Dialogue · Wuhan visited the Yangtze Cetacean Breeding and Research Center in Wuhan, capital of central China's Hubei Province, to learn about porpoise protection. They heard the story of the porpoise population's changing fortunes, reviewed decades of ecological work along the Yangtze River, and witnessed the remarkable progress achieved through conservation. Thanks to sustained habitat rehabilitation and reduced human disturbance, the Yangtze finless porpoise population has gradually recovered from 1,012 individuals in 2017 to 1,426 individuals in 2025. This ecological story offers practical reference for wildlife conservation in freshwater systems across the world and is hailed by mayors around the world.

China's orbiting space station has improved its kitchen with advanced appliances and more food choices to keep its residents well-fed during long stays in orbit. Key upgrades include: - A suite of intelligent appliances for drinking water, food reheating and baking, enabling astronauts in orbit to eat hot meals within 20 minutes instead of waiting longer or eating cold food. - The world's first hot-air baking oven designed for space use achieves efficient, low-energy removal of cooking fumes and has allowed astronauts in orbit to enjoy baked chicken wings, steak and cake. - Astronaut food now includes nearly 200 varieties, while the flight menu cycle has been extended to 10 days. Fresh vegetables, nuts, cakes and meats can be baked and processed in orbit, and yogurt can be fermented in space.

China has announced a new breakthrough in radioactive isotope technology, with multiple domestically developed specifications of krypton isotope thickness measurement sources unveiled to meet the needs of different industrial applications. The development marks a shift from reliance on imports to domestic production of such products. Krypton isotopes, an important type of radioactive isotope, are widely used in high-end manufacturing industries, including new energy batteries, specialty paper and thin films.

Two large groundwater reserves have recently been discovered in the Taklimakan Desert — China's largest desert, challenging the long-held belief that the desert's underground water is limited to stagnant or saline water. The discoveries were made near a town in Minfeng County on the southern edge of the desert and in an area south of the Mazartag Mountains in the desert's hinterland.

The linear accelerator of the Hefei Advanced Light Facility (HALF) successfully generated and delivered an electron beam on Sunday in east China's Anhui Province, marking a key step forward in the construction of the world's most advanced fourth-generation synchrotron radiation facility in the low-energy range. Based on diffraction-limited storage ring technology, the fourth-generation synchrotron radiation facility operates at a designed energy of 2.2 GeV and generates highly intense and coherent light, expected to serve as a "super microscope" for scientists to probe the microscopic structure of matter.

In China, a total of 59 innovative drugs and 51 innovative medical devices have been approved for market since the beginning of 2026, including 13 first-in-class drugs featuring new mechanisms or targets, according to the National Medical Products Administration (NMPA).

China successfully launched nine satellites into space from the Dongfeng commercial space innovation pilot zone in northwest China at 12:03 p.m. Sunday (Beijing Time). The satellites were carried by a Lijian-1 Y18 carrier rocket and have entered their planned orbits.
