That’s not what happened. SARU was in serious financial trouble in 2016, but there’s no evidence NZR “bailed out” South African Rugby so the Springboks could keep playing. You’re confusing SANZAAR’s shared commercial revenue with a bailout. South Africa was one of the biggest contributors to that revenue pool in the first place. Short-term memory indeed.
Love how South Africans once again have to bring up the fact that we wouldn’t accept their terms to be in super rugby. Do yall not remember that NZR bailed out your SAR with money when you were all in debt and the springboks couldn’t afford to play anymore? Short term memory 😂

Good article. Non-WP/Stormers supporters also need to remember that all of these latest signings are originally from the Cape. If they have the opportunity to come home, that means more than money, and explains why some are even willing to buy themselves out of contracts to return. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if Eben, Pieter-Steph and Damian return to the Stormers at the end of their current contracts, even if it means taking massive pay cuts. Sometimes being home matters more. I’m sure the Stormers would gladly welcome them back too.

That’s because Super Footy is slowly morphing into rugby league, and the only time New Zealand players play actual rugby is during Test season. They’re playing two different sports!

Not quite the same thing. Moos left in July and, while it was reported he hadn’t played URC rugby for the Stormers, I can’t find anything saying he left specifically for game time. With Pead, limited game time was repeatedly reported as a reason he wanted out of the Lions. His move was only confirmed today, so judging it off this weekend is premature. I’d also be surprised if Moos plays more than the 265 minutes Pead managed last season.

Can anyone tell me - are the “bailout boys” the forwards and the “Goof Troop” the backline? Just so I know what we’re talking about this season!
A few reasons, I think. A lot of Lions fans still really like Pead and are frustrated he hasn’t had more game time. There’s still bitterness over the Stormers needing SARU assistance, and now we’re doing well, have a wealth of talent coming through, and players actively wanting to come home and play for us. The Stormers getting their way again just rubs salt into an already open wound. Then you’ve got the usual resentment from some of the fans up north who seem irritated by anything going right in Cape Town.
