@girlbossmoder Happy to say I had the exact same 4am confusion about sheaves as a beginning grad student (um, ten years ago...)! I wrote a blog post about it instead of going to sleep, using down-to-earth language and manic energy: bhepler.com/2012/12/05/she…

Earlier this year, I was lucky enough to present my research at a conference @_CIRM in France. The topic "D-modules: Applications to Algebraic Geometry, Arithmetic and Mirror Symmetry", focused on irregular singularities of D-modules and their Stokes phenomena. #AcademicTwitter

Submitted my paper "Moderate growth and rapid decay nearby cycles via enhanced ind-sheaves" (arxiv.org/abs/2206.06095) after two years of effort. (Joint w/ Andreas Hohl @imjprg) on topological aspects of the irregular Riemann-Hilbert Correspondence! #mathtwitter

@bisimplicial I buy loads of scratch notebooks for basic idea generation/brainstorming of proofs. Anything remotely interesting gets written in something nicer (eg, a moleskine notebook) that I would notice/regret losing. Handwritten notes (with fountain pens) are the only thing that’s worked!

@dwakihiro @bisimplicial I’m so happy to see someone else including “interludes” in their notes.

Are you even doing math research if you’re not sure half of the things you’re doing are even defined? #research #AcademicTwitter

Hari Seldon's entire groundbreaking research, on which a millennia-long plan to save the galaxy is based, is expressed as a SINGLE EQUATION. Only He understands it. The other characters all have "faith" in his "numbers". Like...come on. We're not THAT bad at communicating.

really glad to see literally any representation of mathematicians in mainstream media (re: apple+'s "foundation" adaptation), but it would've been nice if they consulted with actual mathematicians for the script? The dialogue is so...dumb.

@JSEllenberg Great point!! Definitely spending a lot more effort on giving my projects a broader appeal this time around

Does anybody else struggle to write up research summaries for grant proposals? Like, the balance of jargon vs high-level motivation, and when to sweep certain details under the rug to get the right “picture” across?

IMO this is probably one of the most important skill for research (convincing wider groups of people your stuff matters), and as an educator (distilling the important underlying ideas from technical jargon for non-experts). Guess I need more practice

Got an email about how the university library budget is tight so they might get rid of some physics journal subscriptions. This will save them $28k/yr. Meanwhile, the head football coach here makes $4.5 MILLION per year.

@PatNicodemus True! I encountered this again when learning about Stokes-filtered local systems (~=flat sections of meromorphic connections with irreg. singularities in dim. 1). It pops up the strangest places!
