How many times did Jack Tramiel appear on the cover of TIME magazine? Did you know Steve Jobs appeared on the cover of TIME Magazine 8 times. Jack Tramiel? Zero times. Yet without Jack, the personal computer revolution might never have reached the masses.! Jack Tramiel — the founder of Commodore — had a simple, radical vision: "Computers for the masses, not the classes." While Steve was building expensive machines for businesses and enthusiasts, Jack pushed Commodore to create: The VIC-20 — the first computer to sell over 1 million units. The Commodore 64 — the best-selling single computer model of all time (estimates of 12–17 million units) He brought real computing power into living rooms across the world at prices families could actually afford. He took on IBM, Apple, and the entire industry with aggressive pricing and vertical integration. The C64 alone introduced millions of kids to programming, gaming, and digital creativity. Steve Jobs brilliantly marketed the future and the premium experience. Jack Tramiel delivered computing to the everyday person. Both were visionaries. Both changed the world. But only one got the TIME covers. This is a mock-up I created because history sometimes forgets the scrappy immigrants and ruthless executors who made the revolution affordable. Jack Tramiel (born Jacek Trzmiel in Poland, Holocaust survivor) built an empire that put computers in more homes than almost anyone else in the 1980s. Respect to Steve. But Jack deserved his cover too.

You can steal one weapon from any game. What are you taking?

What's a game that you've beaten but still keep coming back to replay once in a while? One early candidate for me is Bruce Lee (1984), designed by Ron J. Fortier. Two of the most recognizable sounds - the footsteps and the sound of collecting lanterns (or whatever they are) - are hardwired into my brain. Bruce Lee is basically kung-fu Jesus, so I was instantly hooked. I still play it to this day, even after finishing it a gazillion times. To me, it’s a true classic that never ages. What's yours?

Did you know the iconic seaQuest DSV intro was powered by Commodore Amiga? Back in 1993, when CGI was still in its infancy and insanely expensive, Amblin Imaging (Steven Spielberg’s effects house) chose a revolutionary low-cost solution: a render farm of Commodore Amiga 2000 computers running NewTek LightWave 3D and the Video Toaster. All those stunning external shots of the massive seaQuest submarine gliding through the ocean depths? Rendered on Amigas. The show only used about 1.5 minutes of CGI per episode, but it looked groundbreaking for television at the time. They networked dozens of Amigas together to handle the complex underwater visuals — a setup that helped make high-quality 3D effects accessible beyond big Hollywood budgets. This was the same Amiga + LightWave combo that famously powered early seasons of Babylon 5 and other 90s sci-fi hits. The Video Toaster even won an Emmy for Technical Achievement in 1993! Who remembers being surprised to see "Directory Art" after you typed: LOAD "$", 8 LIST Instead of a boring list of filenames and block counts, the entire directory screen transformed into a beautiful piece of directory art (dir art / d/art). The surprise hit hard the first time you saw it on a cracked game disk; I was like, "What just happened?!" The drive's "directory" isn't a normal file — when you ask for "$" (the special filename meaning "show directory"), the drive generates a fake BASIC program on the fly. The first two bytes are the load address (like any PRG file), then it spits out tokenized BASIC lines: line numbers (those 18, 40, etc.), the block counts as "PRINT" statements, filenames in quotes, file types like PRG or DEL, and finally "107 BLOCKS FREE." and "READY." as the last "lines." Normally this just looks like a messy program listing when you LIST it. But clever sceners realized: "Hey, we can overwrite those 'lines' with PETSCII block characters (like the diamond borders, checker patterns, hearts, etc.) while keeping the structure intact so the drive still thinks it's a valid directory." They used deleted files (type DEL) or carefully placed dummy entries to draw in the 16-column filename area, turning the directory into ASCII/PETSCII art. When this popped up on your C64, it was amazing. Who remembers seeing directory art on their Commodore 64?
