Anthropic’s economics team put out a scenario model for AI and the US economy through 2030. There’s an interactive explorer plus a technical paper behind it. Their basic idea is simple: jobs are piles of tasks. AI can help you do a task, take the task over, ignore it, or help invent new ones. That mix is what actually changes a job over time. They walk through three futures. Modest looks a lot like the internet: real gains, nothing wild. Substantial is bigger. AI can handle a big chunk of knowledge work by 2030, growth runs hot, and wages for knowledge workers mostly stall while other workers do better. Extreme is the scary one. AI outcompetes people on most knowledge work, does a lot of it alone, and barely creates new knowledge jobs. The country gets much richer on paper, but knowledge-worker pay drops and unemployment jumps. They also surveyed more than 10,000 Americans. The average answers land near substantial. Roughly one in ten map to extreme. What stuck with me: in the stronger scenarios, GDP is up, but a bigger share of that growth goes to capital instead of wages. Knowledge workers take most of the hit. I’m not treating this as a prediction. It leaves out policy, robots, demand shocks, and a bunch of other mess.
