Eritrea and its tyrannical ruler are acting like a neighborhood bully who throws the first punch and then screams “victim!” when someone finally fights back. Here is how the sequence unfolded:- 1️⃣ Isaias became increasingly hostile after Ethiopia signed the Pretoria Peace Agreement with the TPLF. 2️⃣ He then helped organize a coalition- referred to as Tsimdo (ፅምዶ) with the stated objective of toppling Abiy Ahmed’s government. 3️⃣ The pressure and political maneuvering continued, with, Eritrea encouraging the TPLF to start the war. 4️⃣ The Ethiopian army fought back and routed the TPLF forces and the coalition associated with it. 5️⃣ When Tsimdo began to collapse, Eritrea dropped the pretense and crossed into Afar—entering the war directly to prop up the forces already fighting Ethiopia’s government. 6️⃣ And now comes the irony: after all of this, Isaias and Eritrea are screaming foul and accusing Ethiopia of planning an invasion. For generations, Ethiopia’s northern frontier has been a direction from which invasion, conflict, and immense suffering have repeatedly come. Eritrea has long been part of Ethiopia’s northern geopolitical battlefield. Today is no different. Generations of Ethiopians paid an enormous price defending their homeland. They endured invasion, occupation, and war and repeatedly fought to reclaim their sovereignty. But the most painful chapter was the one in which the struggle came from within. Ethiopians watched as armed movements operating from the northern frontier - first the EPLF and later the TPLF - became central actors in conflicts that profoundly reshaped Ethiopia. The eventual loss of Ethiopia’s coastline and access to ports on the Red Sea was not merely a change on a map. For a country whose civilization, commerce, and history had been connected to the Red Sea for centuries, it became a deep national wound. That history explains why events unfolding along Ethiopia’s northern frontier today carry such emotional weight. For Ethiopians, this is not simply about territory or politics. It is about a country that has repeatedly paid in blood to defend its sovereignty - and a people determined not to see their homeland destabilized again. This is what you said just a few years ago 👇🏾👇🏾 accusing Eritrea of atrocities during its involvement in the previous war. Yet today, you are playing “buddy buddy” with Eritrea’s authoritarian cruel ruler, Isaias Afwerki. If this is not a profound moral contradiction, what is? You cannot condemn atrocities when they serve your narrative and then embrace those responsible when political circumstances change. The people of Tigray have not forgotten the suffering and bloodshed they endured. Those who contributed to that suffering must ultimately answer for their actions. History has a long memory, and accountability cannot simply be erased when yesterday’s enemies become today’s allies.
