🦊 Firefox added a built-in ad blocker to its iOS app. It’s a great privacy win, but it actually highlights a massive, anti-competitive problem with Apple On desktop and Android, you can install any ad-blocking extension you want on Firefox. But on iOS, Apple's strict rules ban full extensions for competing browsers. Only Safari gets dedicated content blockers. Because of this, Firefox was forced to build a basic blocker from scratch just to compete So, is the native Firefox blocker enough? It’s a solid start (powered by EasyList), but it’s just an on/off switch. It purposely leaves search ads (Google, Bing) untouched — which makes sense, since search royalties make up 73% of Mozilla’s revenue If you want total control and custom filters on iOS, Apple essentially forces you to use Safari with a dedicated blocker like AdGuard But if you’re loyal to Firefox, you don't have to choose. Instead of scrolling through an endless wall of raw network logs, you can now filter requests in the Recent Activity screen by a specific app, company, or status. The Manifest V3 drama proved one thing: You don’t control your browser Browser extensions are fantastic tools, but they live inside a walled garden. They can only do exactly what Google, Apple, or Microsoft allows them to do. And Big Tech can change the rules of the game whenever they see fit. We know this firsthand. In February 2025, the strict new Manifest V3 policies forced us to completely remove our custom filters and Quick Fixes from the extension simply because our build failed an opaque Chrome Web Store review. We fought back, of course. By September 2025, our engineers found a loophole using Chrome's new User Scripts API to successfully bring custom rules back and bypass the red tape. But it highlighted an uncomfortable truth: it’s an endless game of cat and mouse. Corporations build higher walls, and independent developers have to spend months figuring out how to climb them. There is a way to stop playing their game altogether. Stop relying on the browser. If you want real privacy, you need filtering that happens at the system level. How to fit an elephant into a phone booth: Surviving Manifest V3 🐘 Chrome’s shift to Manifest V3 forced ad blockers to play by a harsh new set of rules. The biggest issue? Strict limits and the loss of direct control over network filtering. In the Manifest V2 days, an extension could inspect every single network request in real time and block trackers on the spot. It was powerful and gave us total control. Manifest V3 flipped the script: now, the browser handles the blocking, and the extension must hand over a rigid list of rules in advance using the declarativeNetRequest API. To make matters worse, Google slapped developers with strict quotas, capping dynamic rules at just 30,000. For context, a solid filter list requires hundreds of thousands of rules to keep your internet clean. Here is exactly how we adapted to the new reality: — Smarter Quota Management: We built a custom engine that translates our complex syntax into Chrome's basic format on the fly. To maximize the tight 30,000 limit, we developed a system that categorizes rules into "Safe" and "Unsafe" buckets, squeezing every last drop of efficiency out of the browser's quota — Advanced CSS Hiding: If browser restrictions completely prevent us from blocking an ad request at the network level, we rely on cosmetics. We heavily upgraded our CSS engine to surgically hide banners right on the page. The request might happen, but you'll never see the ad — The $urltransform Modifier: Introduced in our recent v5.5 update, this feature is pure engineering magic. It allows us to rewrite URLs on the fly, stripping out invisible tracking parameters before the request even goes out, all without breaking the website itself We’ve spent the last couple of years testing, writing thousands of lines of code, and dodging Web Store limits for one simple reason: so you don't even notice the transition to MV3. The internet is just as clean and fast as it always was.
