A multitude of damning reports and investigations into maternity care have highlighted failures that lead to devastating, life-changing, consequences for mothers and babies, APIL president Guy Forster has told newspaper readers.

Charlie’s Story, the current Rebuilding Shattered Lives campaign film, surpassed four million online views this week. It is a major milestone for the campaign, which seeks to put injured people at the heart of any policymaking in relation to the law on personal injury and clinical negligence.

Fewer injured victims in work also means that tax receipts fall, affecting us all. The NHS is also harmed. Where no claim is made it cannot recover the victim’s treatment costs from the wrongdoer. This is already having a significant impact - since 2021, NHS finances have been hit by almost £300 million because of the collapse in motor injury claims.
The growing justice gap in personal injury affects all of society, not just injured people. A drop in compensation claims increases the amount the Government spends on benefits, for example. Compensation provides rehabilitation, helping people get back to work.
People injured at work deserve compensation. But for many, justice is increasingly difficult to get.
Victims of asbestos-related lung cancer should not have to trace all their former employers before they can receive compensation. It is unjust to expect people with a terminal disease to hunt down records in their dying days.
The comment comes after a Freedom of Information request revealed local councils have paid £3.75 million in compensation to pupils injured at school. dailymail.com/news/article-1…
"Compensation can only be claimed when there has been negligence by the school or the authority that runs it, not for simple accidents or mishaps which could never be foreseen," APIL president Guy Forster has told The Mail on Sunday.

"The situation is a total inequality of arms and a deeply insensitive way to treat grieving relatives," said past president Matthew Tuff.
When someone dies unexpectedly, relatives often have to deal with attending an inquest as they seek answers about how their loved one died, which can be an overwhelming experience. The family of the person who died has no automatic right to publicly-funded legal help.
