the most underrated hire right now is a great product person. when i say product person i'm def not talking about a product manager. perhaps i think there has to be somewhat of a new role. i don't have a good name for it yet but maybe something like "product thinker".. someone with an intuitive grasp of the product as it exists, where it's soft, where it sings, & how to iterate it toward something even sharper. in some sense, this person has to cohesively hold in their head where this product should be 2 years from now & work backwards from that. i say this cuz when building was hard, engineering was the bottleneck & the status hierarchy often reflected that. building is no longer hard. which means the variance in outcomes has shifted almost entirely to judgment on what to build, how to sequence it, & how to talk about it. & the story matters as much as the thing. internally, it organizes the team around a shared model of why. externally, it shapes the interpretive frame users bring to their first experience. you can't retrofit narrative onto a product & expect it to land, it has to be load bearing from the start. the rarest version of this person sits at the intersection of culture & deep technology. someone genuinely bilingual. they know what's technically possible & they know which cultural currents are real vs. ephemeral. that combo is what separates products that feel inevitable from products that feel assembled. before ppl clap back with this person has always been valuable, i know.. i am just saying now they might be the most *important* person in the room. their value compounds like never before.

I'm Boris and I created Claude Code. Lots of people have asked how I use Claude Code, so I wanted to show off my setup a bit. My setup might be surprisingly vanilla! Claude Code works great out of the box, so I personally don't customize it much. There is no one correct way to use Claude Code: we intentionally build it in a way that you can use it, customize it, and hack it however you like. Each person on the Claude Code team uses it very differently. So, here goes.

OpenAI’s new agent toolkit looks slick, but it feels like a step sideways, not forward. At first glance, it’s polished: a visual way to chain actions, decisions, and agents. Under the hood, though, it’s the same deterministic flowchart logic we’ve seen for years in tools like n8n or Zapier, except those platforms are LLM agnostic and already come with rich integrations across ecosystems. It’s automation, not autonomy. By doubling down on predefined paths, OpenAI seems to be retreating from its own belief that AI should learn and improve over time. The real future of automation isn’t drag and drop. It’s natural language orchestration where you describe a workflow (“when X happens, do Y”) and refine it conversationally. Flowcharts don’t scale, and maintaining dozens of them quickly becomes brittle. The next generation of automation won’t be built, it will learn itself by watching how we work, adapting and evolving automatically. That’s when AI stops executing logic and starts understanding it.

Sometimes, the obvious must be studied so it can be asserted with full confidence: - LLMs can not answer questions whose answers are not in their training set in some form, - they can not solve problems they haven't been trained on, - they can not acquire new skills our knowledge without lots of human help, - they can not invent new things. Now, LLMs are merely a subset of AI techniques. Merely scaling up LLMs will *not* lead systems with these capabilities. There is little doubt AI systems will have these capabilities in the future. But until we have small prototypes of that, or at least some vague blueprint, bloviating about AI existential risk is like debating the sex of angels (or, as I've pointed out before, worrying about turbojet safety in 1920). bath.ac.uk/announcements/…

The “good old days” were much harder. In 1865 the average British worker worked 124,000 hours over their life (like the US & Japan). In 1980, only 69,000 hours, despite living longer. Since then, it dropped slower, by 6%. We went from spending 50% of our lives working to 20%!
