Many students are sold a lie that learning should feel pleasurable, and when that's not their experience, the cognitive dissonance eats them alive. It's like someone signs up for strength & conditioning at a gym and the trainer tells them that they should feel pleasure doing pushups, sprints, deadlifts, etc. Or like a nutritionist saying "you should enjoy the taste of broccoli." Completely alienating. What a good trainer will say is "Yes, it feels taxing, and that's okay, that's normal. Our goal here is not pleasure, it's satisfaction -- making progress, doing things you weren't able to do before, feeling good about what you've accomplished, transforming yourself in ways that are beneficial for your future. You're here to work, so let's do work." People respect that, and there's a kind of comfort in knowing that we're all here to do serious work. Whether it's the gym or the classroom, that's what people need to hear.

Wisdom you possess but do not practice results in you having a higher accountability, not a more noble character. A sobering thought for me.
Underrated life advice: Never make someone regret being honest with you. If someone has the courage to tell you the truth, don’t punish them for it. You can disagree. But if you train people to believe that honesty gets punished, they’ll start giving you comfort instead of truth.
I finally understand what Machiavelli meant when he said, "Never play fair in a game where others cheat." It doesn't mean become evil. It means stop being naive. Stop bringing honesty to people who study manipulation, stop giving access to people who weaponize closeness, and stop expecting clean hands from people who already showed you they'll throw dirt. Sometimes wisdom is not revenge. Sometimes wisdom is learning the rules of the room before the room uses your goodness against you.
Teach your children that speaking up matters more than always being nice. That having a backbone matters more than being easy to please. That strong standards matter more than everyone’s approval. And that self-respect will always matter more than being chosen.
Jesus warns people far more often about greed than about sex, yet almost no one thinks they are guilty of greed.

An example of a God beyond our comprehension that many modern people refuse to believe in- Many people say "I can't believe God could have reasons for allowing evil and suffering that I can't think of. If I can't think of any good reasons—there can't be any." When we say "I can't believe in a God who would ___", many times, in one way or another, ultimately we are saying we don't really want a God beyond our comprehension.

Even toddlers experience the joy of giving. Evidence: When kids under 2 share a snack with a puppet, they exude enthusiasm. They actually smile bigger and laugh more after giving a treat than getting one for themselves. Kindness is a fundamental source of happiness.
