My issue with the JVP protest isn’t that it was “performative.” Everything about protest has a performative dimension. My issue is what exactly was being performed. Politicians voluntarily getting arrested by the NYPD creates the image that they are powerless protesters confronting some external authority. But they are elected officials. If their concern is that the NYPD arrests people protesting Netanyahu while Netanyahu himself walks freely through New York, then why isn’t the demand directed at the political leadership responsible for the NYPD? Where is the demand to disband the SRG? Where is the accountability for the police leadership? Where is the confrontation with City Hall over police repression? Those demands were perfectly fashionable when Eric Adams was mayor. They shouldn’t disappear because a socialist now occupies City Hall. And there is something particularly perverse about turning arrest itself into the spectacle. Ordinary Palestinians and organizers get arrested without celebrities beside them, photographers documenting their bravery, elected officials amplifying them, or organizations turning their arrests into glossy press releases. A Palestinian comrade of mine was arrested that same day after being attacked by a Zionist. Where was this attention for him? The question is why elected officials are performing powerlessness instead of exercising the power they actually have. If the NYPD is the institution arresting protesters, protecting Netanyahu’s movement through the city, and determining how dissent is policed, then changing who gets ceremonially arrested by that institution is not enough. Stop normalizing the repression. Challenge the people who control it.

Israeli government-funded ads are running on LinkNYC kiosks outside the UN in New York. One mimics an official UN ad before showing a mushroom cloud and warning that “a nuclear Iran is a threat to the entire world,” which is and always has been Netanyahu’s justification for war with Iran. I emailed LinkNYC about taking out my own ad and asked about their policy re political messaging. They replied that their policy prohibits “disparaging content or smear campaigns.” How does government-sponsored war propaganda consisting of a nuclear mushroom cloud not violate a rule against disparaging content?

As someone who has organized protests in NYC, including outside the UN, for many years, I think UNGA is a good reminder that you don’t need an organization to protest. The NYPD creates “frozen zones” around the UN, with rolling street closures as delegations and motorcades move throughout the city. That’s exactly why affinity groups, collectives and individuals organizing autonomously from multiple points can be more effective than concentrating everyone at one mass protest blocks away, especially one happening hours after someone is scheduled to speak. Protesters can be present throughout the surrounding area, from as many accessible directions as possible, for hours leading up to a speech. UNGA already brings Midtown traffic to a crawl, historically under 4 mph. More people converging on the area means more congestion and disruption around an event that depends on moving motorcades through Manhattan. If your goal is to protest Netanyahu’s presence, why wait until after he speaks? Be there all morning. Be there before he arrives. Make his presence impossible for the city to ignore.
