I didn’t become a Nazi in a bunker. I became one in the comments under a post about small boats I had made. All I said was I wasn’t wild about unvetted men coming over the Channel in dinghies. That was the whole thought. No manifesto. No armband. Just...maybe we should know who they are before they land on our shores. An old acquaintance of sorts, we shall call him Dave. Well Dave leapt on it like he’d been waiting since school. Dave talks ane posts a lot about cultural appropriation. He’ll give you a twenty-minute lecture if you wear the wrong hat, read anything other than the BBC. Then he’ll wrap a keffiyeh round his neck and wander about like Lawrence of Arabia’s less successful cousin. I assume it’s to remind him to dry the dishes. Nothing else about him suggests he’s ever finished a job let alone have one. “Typical gammon,” he wrote. “Nazi.” I was making a cup of tea. I thought to myself, I’ve been called plenty in 50 odd years. Never that, mid-teabag, by a man whose moral compass is a flag collage of incompatible ideoloies and a fermented pot of flour. Then I made it worse. I said I wasn’t sure men should be in women’s sport, or changing rooms. Then BOOM!......Thirty seconds. Three strangers. Nazi. Fascist. Literally Hitler. One of them had pronouns in the bio and a tote bag that said “Be Kind.” Be kind. Also you’re Hitler. By lunchtime the charge sheet was complete. Borders. Kids and phones. The idea that a country is allowed to decide who comes in. That was enough. Apparently the SS started the same way. I went out for milk expecting jackboots. Then at the Co-op, Karen from the residents’ association was collecting money for Gaza or something. I politely refused.... She inhaled like I’d announced a putsch in the car park. “Oh,” she whispered. “So you’re one of *them*.” I tried to point out that the actual Nazis were fairly committed to invading other countries, not to asking whether a dinghy full of unknowns should skip the security queue. She wasn’t listening. The word had already done its job. That’s the point of it now. When everyone is a Nazi, nobody is. My grandad fought the real ones. So did most of that lot. They didn’t do it because they wanted quieter streets and a functioning border. They did it because those people were organised, industrial, murdering bastards. Now it just means, bloke who won’t clap. Dave thinks a border is fascism. Karen thinks common sense is a war crime. Ask what a woman is and you get upgraded. The first time you hear it, you check yourself. The fiftieth time you check the day of the week. They think they’ve dropped a bomb. They’ve been firing a water pistol so long the tank’s empty. You know it’s finished as a word when they pin it on a 50 year-old who wants to know who’s arriving in a rubber boat, the same label they use for the worst people in history. So I put the kettle on. If the usual crowd want to have another go in the comments, knock yourselves out. I’m getting a badge made. “Official Nazi. Asks Who’s In The Dinghy?.”

None of the above men have been even tried, let alone convicted of any sexual offence. Meanwhile, in the UK, which is the engine of all three cases, thousands of women are actually raped weekly, with 85% not even reporting their assults, convictions against Asian rape gangs remain rare, and victims wait literally years for a day in court.
